The Curious Behavior of Red-Crested Cardinals
There’s something magical about birdwatching in Hawaii, and if you’re on the island of Kauai, you’re in for a special treat. Among the many fascinating species here, one that’s been especially fun to observe is the Red-crested Cardinal.
These striking birds are hard to miss. The males sport a vivid, blood-red crest atop a white body with soft gray backs, while the females are more muted, with brown crests and subtler coloring. But what really caught my attention wasn’t just their appearance-it was their behavior.
Spend a few moments watching them, and you’ll likely hear their signature call: a squeaky sound that’s oddly reminiscent of a tiny plush toy being squeezed. What’s even more entertaining is the dynamic between the male and female. The female often follows the male around, squeaking persistently, almost like she’s saying, “Feed me! Feed me!”
And sure enough, the male obliges. It’s fascinating to watch him forage and then gently offer food to the female. I rarely observed the roles reversed. The female’s squeaky chorus continues throughout this ritual, making the whole interaction both charming and a bit comical.
If you’re visiting Hawaii, take some time to slow down and observe the wildlife-you’ll be amazed at the tiny dramas unfolding in the treetops and underbrush. The red-crested cardinal is just one of many local species that make birdwatching here a truly delightful experience.
